May Izumi & Lori Uyehara - The Ever After Tales Show 2009

Cedar Street Galleries will be hosting the "The Ever After Tales Show" featuring new sculptures and prints by May Izumi and Lori Uyehara. The show will run from January 23, 2009 to March 8, 2009.

I often tell people that my work is about stories. I read a lot as a child and elements from those stories often creep into my work. Now, after making art for a few years, I think my work is more about things that happen on the periphery of the plot or once the tale is over. Many times when I reach the "happily ever after" ending, questions start popping into my mind. Usually they come well after the book is closed and I've moved on to something else. To most people they are probably silly questions — things no one would normally care about. I don't know what it says about me but I can't help thinking about them.

For example, if you're the evil stepsister in the story, and you manage to survive until the end, what do you do once the heroine is married to her prince? If someone steals all the stars out of the sky how do you go about putting them back? What would you be willing to do to take back your heart's desire? These thoughts crowd in my head until I make a piece — sometimes to answer the question and sometimes just to see what the question looks like.

— May Izumi

These works draw upon the diversity of the natural world and the complex relational systems that govern its evolution as a primary source of inspiration. They are a visual discourse on the topics of interconnectedness, preservation, survival, and fragility. Through them I invite the viewer to travel through Hawaii's changing landscapes and explore paths to its future.

Constructed from found objects and reclaimed woods these pieces use a minimum of new materials. They were specifically developed to encourage the use of normally overlooked or discarded materials.
